Ceres, Stanislaus County
Ceres is named for the Roman goddess of agriculture, a fitting choice for a town surrounded by almond and peach orchards. Daniel Whitmore built the first house here in 1870, and it still stands near the center of town. The city incorporated in 1918 and sits on Highway 99 just across the Tuolumne River from Modesto.
